the "fiscal cliff" deadline, president obama sent his treasury secretary to capitol hill to negotiate with congressional leaders and it didn't appear to go well. >> i got to tell you, i'm disappointed in where we are and disappointed in what's happened over the last couple of weeks. but going over the "fiscal cliff" is serious business. and i'm here seriously trying to resolve it. i would hope the white house would get serious, as well. >> house speaker john boehner came out of the meeting declaring himself disappointed with the white house's proposals. he says democrats have failed to offer a specific plan for cutting spending. and sources who have been in on the talks for months say even though in public the deal seems like it won't happen, in private it is starting to take shape. here's some of the details they have given politico.com. taxes will go up about $1.2 trillion, entitlement programs mainly medicare will be cut by no less than $400 billion. there will be at least $1.2 trillion in spending cuts and war cuts. >>> another point in the "fiscal cliff" discussion unemployment a

got the president's ear earlier this week on the impending fiscal cliff. today, president obama meets with mitt romney for a private lunch at the white house. and treasury secretary tim geithner will hold talks with congressional leaders about reducing the deficit while keeping the economy growing - a lot of input being gathered on how to resolve the inevitable. president obama met with his cabinet wednesday for the first time since his re-election. but otherwise, his schedule has been filled with business leaders and resolving the fiscal crisis sooner rather than later. world. europe follows asia higher after a pop on wall street. president obama and congress make positive comments about avoiding the fiscal cliff. and uk banks brace for possible new rules on capital and lending as bank of england governor mervyn king prepares to unveil his financial stakt reporbility. and the search is on on for the winners of the pow ball ticket as two tickets matched all the numbers in the $580 million drawing. we're getting a lot of green on the heat map and not a lot of red. sur enough, the stoxx 600 is up 0.8%. we can take a look in at the bourses and almost a mirror image of yesterday. ibex 35 adding 1.6%, cac 40 up more than 1%. the dax adding 0.8%. and we just got german unemployment figures. plus the foot city 100 up 0.8% this morning. so pretty much a strong session across the board. again, following what we saw in the u.s. yesterday. take a look at the bond wall here of course we have an italian auction coming up later and italy's ten year, below 4.5% this morning. so price rising. that yield falling. spain also benefiting. that yield down to 5.2%. b

in the last 100 years. with the so-called fiscal cliff looming mr. obama sends chief negotiator treasury secretary tim gheiter for individual meetings with each member of the conditioningal leadership which includes speaker john boehner, perhaps the most important player here. the meetings mark the beginning of the real negotiations. that doesn't mean the posturing stage is behind us. one capitol hill veteran, former fdic, sheila bair, a long-time staffer by the way who butted heads with geithner in the past, made this interesting observation to david gregory about tim geithner saying he's not the right guy for the white house to be sending in for these talks. >> do you think tim geithner, secretary geithner is the right person to lead the negotiations for the administration sf. >> i don't know. i don't think this is tim's strong suit. i think tim was given the job of treasury secretary because he understood the banking system. he's not a budget guy. he's not a tax guy. he's never really worked in this sphere. >> geithner is leading these talks for two reasons. he and the presid

remember the moment in the presidential debate when obama said going off the cliff not going to happen. doesn't seem social or right now. >> not going to happen, what he said. i am at harvard kennedy school where right this very minute senior campaign managers from the romney and obama campaign and every other campaign are being debriefed by top political reporters and it is interesting because obama clearly sees that he has a mandate out of the election on fiscal cliff issues. even though it wasn't a huge issue in the debate the white house is behaving like it has that mandate. what you have been seeing is republicans showing signs of flexibility and i am not just talking john boehner saying revenue is on the table. we have republican senators saying they will stand up to the grover norquist tax pledge. they're willing to break it which is pretty big news. we also have the influential member of congress, republican tom cole saying we have got to agree to extend the tax cut just for those people making $250,000 and below and letting the more wealthy be taxed. definitely flexibility but
